Here is an example of our four night itinerary:
Arrive and check in to the hotel. Rest and relax before a Welcome Reception and Dinner. Our London base is the Grange St Paul’s, a five-star hotel located in the heart of the old City of London – from where Shakespeare would have started his travels.
We begin our journey by exploring Bankside – Shakespeare’s theatrical playground.
We’ll discover the sights and relics of Elizabethan London, before arriving at the Globe, where we’ll find out more about the historical life of the theatre, and the construction of the new playhouse. We’ll also be treated to an Elizabethan Dressing Demonstration.
We will enjoy a performance in Shakespeare’s “wooden O” and dine in the beautiful surroundings of the Globe’s Swan Restaurant – a fitting conclusion to our first day of exploration.
Leaving London by coach, we trace Shakespeare’s journey into the heart of the country. When travelling via Oxford, Shakespeare had the chance to stay with his friend, the local vintner, John Davenant. We’ll discover the stories and history of this beautiful university town.
There will be some free time for lunch and individual sightseeing. It is a short journey into the Cotswolds to see the mystical “Rollright Stones”, rumoured to have inspired the witches’ scenes in “The Scottish Play” and learn about the tales and legends from the Founder of the Cotswold Order of Druids. Arriving in Stratford-upon-Avon across the same bridge that Shakespeare would have crossed, we settle by the banks of the River Avon and spend the first of two nights at the 4*Arden Hotel.
Stratford-upon-Avon lends itself to gentle exploration and today we discover many of the places that played such a significant part in Shakespeare’s life. Amongst these will be the newly restored grounds of New Place, where he spent many of his days between journeys back and forth to London. We pay our respects to the great man when we visit his grave in Holy Trinity Church followed by some free time for lunch, not included. The world famous Royal Shakespeare Company will provide us, via a private behind the scenes tour, with a wonderful opportunity to discover how Shakespeare’s plays continue to be re-imagined for a modern audience, before being treated in the evening to one of their current productions. There will be a final group pre-theatre dinner at our hotel.
This morning you will have your own time to soak up the atmosphere of the town, take some final photographs and find some last minute mementoes before heading home.
Price from £1275pp. The price includes four nights accommodation in 4-5 star hotels, including breakfast, lunches and dinners (where specified), services of the tour guide and luxury coach travel.
All theatre tickets, tours, talks, entrances to homes and gratuities are also included.
